EyeGate Pharmaceuticals — Positive signals in OBG PRK and PE studies

EyeGate reported data in its Ocular Bandage Gel (OBG) studies in punctate epitheliopathies (PE) and in corneal wound healing following bilateral photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) surgery. The PRK study showed improved wound healing and the PE trial showed improvement in patient symptoms. EyeGate will meet with the FDA to discuss whether the existing data are sufficient for a 510(k) de novo regulatory filing.

Business description

EyeGate Pharmaceuticals is a specialty pharma firm developing Ocular Bandage Gel (OBG), a clinical-stage proprietary topical eye drop formulation being advanced for moderate dry eye and corneal wound healing. EyeGate’s EGP-437 delivers a corticosteroid through an iontophoresis drug delivery system.

Bull

Large market opportunity in moderate dry eye.

OBG has shown solid efficacy to date in accelerating wound healing compared to SoC in post-PRK surgery across two trials.

Over 3,000 treatments across multiple clinical trials suggest that EGP-437 does not significantly raise intraocular pressure, a side effect associated with prolonged corticosteroid usage.

Bear

The need to raise financing by YE19 to fulfil clinical development strategy could dilute equity holders.

High level of competition in dry eye market.

EGP-437 missed its primary endpoint in Phase IIb study of post-cataract surgery inflammation and in Phase III uveitis trial, raising uncertainty of future development path.

OBG shows improved wound healing

EyeGate’s OBG is a topical eye drop based on its proprietary cross-linked thiolated carboxymethyl-hyaluronic acid (CMHA-S). CMHA-S is believed to have hydrating and healing properties, and its crosslinking may help resist degradation. In the PRK study (n=45), two OBG dosing arms were compared to the current standard of care (SoC), a bandage contact lens (BCL) plus artificial tears. Both OBG arms outperformed the SoC; at day 3, 73% and 87% of eyes in the two OBG arms were healed vs 67% for SoC. At day 4, 100% in OBG treated eyes were healed vs 87% for SoC. There were no safety concerns observed in any group. These results follow a pilot bilateral PRK study (n=39) completed in Q117, which found that at day 3, 83% of those receiving OBG had complete wound closure vs 54% in SoC. All in, OBG is more convenient then SoC (since no BCL) and appears more effective.

PE study shows symptom improvement

In EyeGate’s PE study (n=30), subjects with PE (due to conditions such as dry eye) received either OBG or a commercially available lubricant drop. OBG showed a statistically significant reduction in symptoms at day 7 and 28 (but the result on day 14 was not reported), but there was no significant difference in total corneal staining reduction (26% for OBG vs 23% for lubricant arm) at day 7. Although the reduction in reported symptoms (days 7 and 28) are encouraging, the FDA will be ultimately assess whether the data on hand are sufficient to support clearance on treating PE symptoms. The PE market is much larger than wound healing, as c 30 million Americans have dry eye-related symptoms, vs up to 2-3 million corneal injuries per year in the US.

Valuation: EV of $10.7m; funding need by Q319

EyeGate had $9.9m cash at 30 September 2018. Its H118 net burn rate was $8.84m, and the firm estimates its cash on hand should be sufficient into Q419. A larger and longer study in PE may be needed to better assess the product’s applicability in PE, although the two PRK studies to date provide more robust suggestions of efficacy in the corneal wound healing indication. EyeGate will meet with the FDA to determine whether existing clinical data can support a 510(k) de novo regulatory filing. If not, the firm plans to start its next OBG study in H119.

ICG-Longbow SSUP — Exploiting a niche in UK real estate debt

ICG-Longbow Senior Secured UK Property Debt Investments (LBOW) offers investors exposure to the UK real estate debt market, mainly through investments in senior secured whole loans. LBOW’s investment strategy is supported by the team’s deep expertise in both debt and UK real estate, enabling it to continue to pay a high stable dividend by investing in higher LTV loans, while controlling the risk through extensive analysis of the underlying properties’ cash flow generation potential, as well as the borrower’s business plan. The investment strategy should be assisted by the relatively favourable rental growth prospects in parts of the regional UK real estate market.
