Oryzon (BME: ORY) secures European patent for vafidsemstat
Published by Arron Aatkar

Oryzon Genomics has announced the formal grant of the patent “Methods of treating behavior alterations” from the European Patent Office (EPO), relating to its lead CNS asset, vafidemstat. Importantly, the patent covers the use of vafidemstat as a potential treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) and schizophrenia, both of which are indications being pursued by Oryzon in clinical programmes. This newly granted European patent covers 40 countries and will not expire until at least 2038 (excluding any potential patent term extensions that may provide additional years of protection). Similar patents have also been granted in Australia, South Korea, Malaysia and Russia, with further patent applications pending in other key markets.

Furthermore, the latest announcement communicated that the EPO also provided an “intention to grant” communication, relating to the patent “Methods of treating borderline personality disorder”. Once this patent is granted, it will remain in place until at least 2040 (also excluding potential patent term extensions that may provide additional protection). The company has received similar communications for corresponding patent applications in Japan and Mexico, with additional patent applications pending in other relevant countries. Collectively, these advancements bolster an already robust patent portfolio for the candidate.

BPD is the lead programme for vafidemstat and Oryzon recently confirmed the FDA’s alignment with its planned Phase III programme for vafidemstat. Management is currently focused on preparing to submit a full trial protocol for PORTICO-2 to the FDA (expected within Q125), before a potential trial launch from H225, contingent on regulatory clearance and providing that there are no other delays.
