We enter 2025 with good growth forecast for all the consumer subsectors in the UK, Europe and North America. The subsectors with the best projected growth include automobiles, hotels, restaurants & leisure, leisure products, household durables, broadline retail and specialty retail and there are plenty of companies with good earnings momentum. However, the new year also brings relatively low levels of consumer confidence, following its deterioration at the end of 2024. Uncertainty about the broader outlook has increased in recent weeks, with growth previously forecast to be low in a historical context. An improvement in consumer confidence would be invaluable in reinforcing optimism about the forecast profit growth in the coming year.
